Be proud of great Show

Posted by Digital Editor on August 17, 2007 9:00 AM |

IT WILL take a lot more than a collapsed sewer to keep visitors away from our town this weekend.
Once again, the resort has come up smelling of roses with another fantastic Flower Show.
We should all feel proud of the pulling power of this annual event, where Southport shows itself off to thousands of visitors as a major attraction.
Whether entering prize carrots in the amateur marquee displays, or putting months of backbreaking work into the intricate large-scale exhibits, every contributor to the Show is valuable and gives Southport the unique, friendly atmosphere that other major horticultural events don’t always have.
But Southport and flowers have always had a special relationship.
As well as the annual Show, we have our past successes in the Britain in Bloom competition to be proud of, and Churchtown Botanic Gardens is another jewel in our crown that should never be taken for granted.
At a time when people are campaigning to protect green spaces from industrial expansion, let’s be thankful that our town embraces its open spaces.
Such places are the lungs of our resort, and it is times like this weekend we can use them to display our assets to the rest of the region, and, indeed, the rest of the country.
If you are going to this year’s fabulous floral extravaganza, have a wonderful time – and don’t forget to feel proud when you see visitors enjoying their every minute in Southport.
