Russian roulette with town's future
Posted by Visiter Newsdesk on January 31, 2007 10:15 PM
So Southport has lost out in the government’s big game of chance. But would a new casino, albeit a ‘small’ one compared to Manchester’s ‘super casino’, really have been something we would have wanted anyway?
At least we didn’t gamble the family silver on the bid, unlike our friends in Blackpool who were prepared to stake their town’s future on the wager.
Those in the know say it’s not even a minor set back as Southport is already holding a winning hand which includes an array of developments and schemes which should bring home the chips.
While we know Sefton is not to get a casino, those unbendable iron men on Crosby beach are refusing to pack up and leave.
Supporters of Antony Gormley’s ‘newish’ model army are preparing their final assault in their campaign to ensure these ferrous fellows become permanent residents of the borough.
But don’t miss this Friday’s Southport Visiter to find out just how much it will cost the tax payer to keep the iron men in Sefton, and who in Southport is likely to lose out if the campaign is successful.

Building debate
Posted by Visiter Newsdesk on January 28, 2007 10:08 AM
Developers certainly have designs on Southport.
This week, the Southport Visiter exclusively reveals dramatic new plans for one of the town's most well-known landmarks - the Kingsway building.
The plans include a £30million, 10-storey, contemporary apartment and leisure complex, which will undoubtedly divide opinion.
Traditionalists out there will call the plans Kingsway landscape vandalism, while the more futuristic visionaries will call the proposals Southport's first steps into the future.
In the same week, the Southport Visiter reveals a new £3.5m "22nd century" vision for Lord Street, which includes a complete transformation of the northern end of the boulevard, as well as dramatic upgrading around the war memorial.
Whatever your thoughts on the two latest projects for Southport, you can air your views by logging onto the Southport Visiter's fantastic online forums.
Southport's Offshore Rescue team are celebrating after they hit their £132,000 fundraising target to buy a new boat. Fundraisers thank the generosity of the people of Southport and you can send them your messages of congratulations right now by clicking onto the Southport Visiter forums.

Southport Hero
Posted by Visiter Newsdesk on January 23, 2007 8:16 PM
The word 'hero' is used all too frequently and all too loosely, but it is the only word to describe the courage of Southport teenager Christopher Fraser-Perry.
The former Birkdale High pupil has this week hit the international headlines with an act of such bravery it has astounded the entire world.
While under a barrage of gunfire, Christopher volunteered to be strapped to the wing of a helicopter to recover the body of a fallen colleague.
Christopher's amazing courage is an example to us all. He is the pride of Southport and a true hero in every sense of the word.
Meanwhile back at home, the ever-controversial Chapel Street pedestrianisation project has sparked yet another fierce row.
This time traders warn in this week's Midweek Visiter that the "ill-judged" siting of the new disabled parking bays outside Millets on Tulketh Street, within the pedestrianised zone, is an accident waiting to happen as shoppers are forced to dodge vehicles vying for the much sought after spaces.
Have your say on our special forum, and don't miss this Friday's Southport Visiter for the latest on the row and much more.
Storm chaos

Thursday's freak weather conditions blew any plans we had for this week's paper out of the window.
The newsdesk phones were hot from Visiter readers calling in with their news about the storms.
Our team of reporters took to the streets to see for themselves the havoc the weather was causing, which included damaging buildings, blowing down trees and even overturning a high-sided vehicle. Visiter photographer Gareth Jones braved the elements to bring you the best pictures in town.
Our forum on the uncertain future of Kingswood College was one of the most popular features on the Southport Visiter's website over the past week, so it was satisfying to exclusively report that the school has been given a reprieve to allow parent investors more time to find a new site. You can add your thoughts on the story by simply joining the forum on this site.
The Southport Visiter also exclusively revealed this week that a new buyer has stepped in to take over control of Southport Market. Traders are obviously concerned about the future of the market, but only time will tell what plans new operators Geraud have for the site. Again, you can have your say on what improvements, if any, you think should be made to the market on our forum.
As ever, the Visiter is packed full of all the latest news, views and what's going on in your area.
Let us know what you think, and if you have any news you would like to share with us, just contact the newsdesk.
